The Upcycle Architect (TUPA)
Company Values & The Relationship

The Upcycle Architect (TUPA) is a pioneering social enterprise based in Abuja, Nigeria, co-founded in 2017 by Bilkisu Garba (and supported by Funto Adeh). It’s dedicated to transforming discarded materials especially construction scraps and non-biodegradable waste into beautiful, durable furniture, décor, and architectural finishes. Through creative upcycling, TUPA promotes environmental sustainability, supports local artisans, and educates communities via its Green Academy on practices like “Creative Upcycle” and “Sustainable Interior Design

I had the pleasure of mentoring TUPA’s leadership, working closely with Bilkisu (and Funto) to enhance their organizational strategy, amplify their social mission, and grow their impact across Nigeria's emerging design economy.

Challenge & Solution

When we first began our collaboration, TUPA had already inspired attention with its innovative work, but faced critical operational challenges: they lacked scale, had limited production and workshop space, and their messaging and business systems needed strengthening to fully leverage their potential. Working together, we redefined TUPA’s narrative to highlight its role in job creation, artisan empowerment, and circular design not just upcycling. We supported them in securing and developing a dedicated workspace for production and trainings, formalized their workshop and program structures (especially through the Green Academy), and established stronger financial and marketing frameworks. This blend of narrative clarity, operational expansion, and capacity building equipped TUPA to transcend grassroots traction and lay the foundation for sustainable growth and deeper community impact.
